Real wisdom

Buddhism is founded on a deep appreciation of the fragility and impermanence of life. We will seek out a durable sense of peace and acceptance through contemplation.

For your own death, or the death of a loved one

This course offers help in facing your own death—whether you have a timeline or not—and being of service to a loved one who is dying.

Know what to expect, know how to prepare

Planning ahead makes death and dying easier, both for you and others. There are practical matters that we can decide on ahead of time, freeing up our attention for what matters most.

Reflections on grieving and acceptance

There is no right or wrong way to feel when we are grieving. Whatever our thoughts are, whatever our feelings are, it can help to accept them. In this way, impossible situations can also be a time of deep presence.

The journey

This easy-to-use online course is suitable for all. It features 6 units that form a program of exploration, meditation, and inquiry. Each unit contains around 45 minutes of lessons and contemplations.

A new unit will be released each Monday until the course is fully available. You are free to study at your own pace, and will retain access to the material.

You can follow the course on a computer, mobile app, or download the course as audio files.

Unit 1 | Beginner's Mind at the End

Death is always solemn. It's always extraordinary, and it's always mysterious. It's also the most solitary act we ever undertake. No one goes with us. No one knows what we will experience there. No one stays to tell us.

A long practice of meditation and dharma study, and the self-awareness that Buddhist practice brings, is going to help. And the structure of your beliefs will help guide your experience. But we still do this alone, and we always enter it as a mystery.

Unit 2 | Approaching Your Own Death

The theme of this second unit is learning to face our own death in a very clear way. For many of us, this is somewhat hypothetical: Perhaps you haven't gotten that diagnosis yet, so it can be hard to move your awareness of inevitable death from an intellectual idea to a blunt reality. If you do face a timeline, I hope that this will bring some comfort as we go forward.

Unit 3 | Being with Others Who Are Dying

The theme of this unit is our experience of being with and caring for a person who is dying. To sit vigil by the deathbed is a very old custom, and it's a shared task in most cultures.

The goals for this unit are to understand the ways that people who are dying can communicate, and to understand the internal, psychological tasks of a caregiver.

Unit 4 | The Approaching of Death

Deep acceptance is our friend. Can we be at ease with what is happening? This question goes through every part of our practice. Can we be at ease with this moment, with these circumstances, with these conditions? When the Buddha became ill and he was already quite old, he sat down and then he lay down in front of everybody. He turned toward the assembly and said, "Come see."

In this unit, we will undertake an honest assessment of how we feel about being present at a person's death. We will also evaluate our beliefs about dignity, and learn a few of the signs and symptoms that tell us death is approaching.

Unit 5 | Care of the Body and Advance Planning

In Unit 5, we'll talk about the actual event of a person dying. What do we see when we are with a person as they die? What is that moment of death like? And, then, what do we do with the body when it is all over?

Then we'll explore practical approaches to planning for a death. Planning makes it easier not just for ourselves, but for all of those who survive.

Unit 6 | Mourning and Loss

Grief is one of the most intense and most complicated emotional states that we ever experience. It is uniquely private, different for everyone. Our goal for this unit is simple: to gain a basic understanding of the complex and changing nature of grief and the possibility of a deep presence and acceptance.

Advice for Future Corpses (and Those Who Love Them) by Sallie Tisdale

Such gorgeous writing. Nothing has helped to demystify death more than these pages. You've lifted the veil, and I'm so grateful.
This book genuinely changed the way I look at life and how I think about death. It gave me a completely different perspective and helped me approach these subjects with much more openness and understanding. I've found myself talking about what I learned with anyone who's willing to listen, because I believe these are conversations that more people could benefit from having.

Sallie's Workshops on Death and Dying

We took what we learned and shared it with our family. At first, they were hesitant and didn't really want to talk about death—it's not an easy subject for most people. But as the conversation continued, something changed. We found ourselves opening up in ways we hadn't before, and by the end, we all felt much closer. It was almost as though a weight had been lifted from our shoulders. What made it especially meaningful was that even our 8-year-old grandson joined the conversation and was able to be part of it. It was a surprisingly powerful and connecting experience for our whole family.

Writing as a Spiritual Practice, an online course with Sallie Tisdale

Fascinating insights into energy and creativity, and how these are intertwined with what we are as beings. The quest to find that 'place' from which to allow good, clear, strong, and meaningful words has no simple answer. This course knocked on many inner doors for me.
Excellent, gentle coaching on how to improve your writing skills as well as get out of your own way so that you can open up yourself to writing.
This course is a great spark to ignite the writing fire within.
