As more precious than a wish-fulfilling jewel
 For accomplishing the highest aim,
I will always hold them dear...

The path of mind training

Lojong is an ancient approach for training the mind. It is a relational practice in which we cultivate a wise, humble, and loving approach to life. The fruits of this practice are immeasurable. This online course is a practical guide to lojong training.

At the heart of the course is a key Buddhist text, Eight Verses of Mind Training. Over six weeks, Scott Tusa will unpack the profound wisdom within this short text, which is considered to be a complete resource for a compassionate and awakened life.

Training the Mind begins on Monday 22nd September.

A path between rows of trees
A path you can live

These are relational teachings. As we train in wisdom and compassion, we may find a greater ease and connection around others. We aspire to be content and humble and live with a growing sense of gratitude, wonder, and joy.

Profound teachings

Learn about nonduality and emptiness in a way that is accessible and grounded in your everyday experience. This is a freedom that you can experience here and now, which is the only place that freedom can be found.

Transcendent compassion

For many of us, relationships are the most challenging area of Buddhist practice. Lojong helps us to find equanimity and openness amidst the stress and messiness of life. Ultimately this path puts us in touch with incredible depths of compassion.

Accessible yet complete

Eight Verses of Mind Training is a short, memorable text that carries the essence of lojong practice in thirty-two lines. We will take the text as our compass for this journey. We could even say that all of Buddhism is reflected in its practical guidance.

How Training the Mind Progresses

This easy-to-use online course is available to all. It comprises six units that form a program of guidance, meditation, and implementation in the midst of your life.

Each unit contains around one hour of material to study, as well as contemplative exercises. A new unit will be released each Monday. You are free to study at your own pace, and will retain access to the material.

You can follow the course on a computer, tablet, or phone, or download the course as audio files.

Unit 1 | The path of compassion and wisdom

In this first unit, I'll offer an introduction to lojong as well as an introduction to the path of compassion and wisdom that is Mahayana Buddhism in general.

The combination of lojong and mindfulness is about opening our awareness to life and opening our awareness to where we tend to get stuck, where we tend to contract and constrict into our ego clinging... and how to open that up.

Unit 2 | Cultivating awareness

In our second unit, we'll work with the third verse from our text, as well as the practices of meditative awareness. We'll talk about how to use awareness to grow more agency in our practice and in daily life. We'll also focus on working with challenging emotions and how mindfulness applies to lojong practice.

Unit 3 | Transforming challenges through equanimity and compassion

In our third unit, we'll explore the themes of equanimity and compassion—especially developing compassion toward others. This also includes self-compassion because, personally, I don't view compassion as travelling on a linear path, in/out. I think of it as spiralling out, then right back toward oneself, and again toward others. And ultimately we start to see there's less of a distinction between ourselves and others.

Unit 4 | Breathing compassion: the art of giving and taking

Now we'll take a look at tonglen practice and the general topic within lojong of exchanging oneself and others. This is a nuanced topic that I find needs to be unpacked otherwise it can easily get misunderstood or the power of it may or may not be evoked.

We'll discuss how to exchange oneself with others, why that's important, how to understand that within your meditation, and of course, how to actually do it in meditation practice.

Unit 5 | Seeing clearly: nonduality and freedom from delusion

We turn to an exploration of the Buddhist teachings on nonduality and emptiness, especially as they relate to lojong and verse eight in our text.

This is really where the exploration of liberation and enlightenment happens on the level of how we're perceiving reality, how we're perceiving our emotions, our thoughts, and our sense of self and other. These teachings open up a lot of possibilities.

Unit 6 | Embodying lojong in life

For our final unit, we'll review what we've learned so far and I'll share advice around making these teachings as practical as possible. In particular, we'll focus on integrating these skills into both our formal meditation and our daily life in deeper ways than we've already explored.

Scott Tusa

I’m Scott Tusa, a Buddhist meditation teacher and practitioner who has spent the last twenty-five years exploring how to embody and live meaningfully through the Buddhist path.

At age 16, my mother's death sparked a deep longing for healing and spiritual wisdom that eventually led me to Tibetan Buddhism. I spent my early 20s seeking out and learning from a variety of Tibetan Buddhist masters, and was ordained by His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama as a Buddhist monk at age 28.

I spent the next nine years as a monk, deepening my understanding of the dharma, engaging in solitary meditation retreats, and continuing my studies with teachers in India, Nepal, and the United States, including my main teachers Lama Zopa Rinpoche and Tsoknyi Rinpoche.

Since 2008, I have been teaching Buddhist meditation in group and one-to-one settings in the United States, Europe, Latin America, and online, bringing Buddhist wisdom to modern meditators, helping them to deepen and develop more confidence in their practice.
